A wonderfully unique piece of Irish rugby history, this 1997 Aer Lingus RFC player jersey captures a side of rugby culture rarely seen in the modern professional era. Made in Ireland by O’Neills, the jersey comes from a time when corporate and workplace rugby clubs played a major role in the Irish club scene, particularly around Dublin. Aer Lingus RFC was closely connected to Ireland’s national airline, with the club originally built around airline staff and employees, creating a strong social and sporting culture within the company. Jerseys like this were never produced in large commercial numbers, making surviving examples exceptionally difficult to find today.

The jersey itself is full of character, featuring classic Irish green and navy hoops alongside an embroidered Aer Lingus RFC crest and the instantly recognisable old Aer Lingus sponsor panel across the front. The oversized number 9 on the reverse strongly suggests player use, adding even more authenticity to the piece. O’Neills rugby jerseys from this era remain hugely popular among collectors thanks to their heavyweight feel and unmistakable Irish rugby styling. Condition is good overall for age, however the sleeves have been cut shorter at some stage, although neatly done, and there is also a hole at the base of the collar, both reflected in the photos. Despite this, the jersey remains an outstanding and highly unusual piece of vintage Irish rugby history.
